Can art lead us back to God? In this episode of Into The Truth, Pierpaolo Finaldi is joined by Fr Patrick van der Vorst, founder of Christian Art, to explore the profound connection between beauty, sacred art and the Catholic faith.
Fr Patrick brings a unique perspective, having spent years working in the art world before becoming a Catholic priest. He explains why beauty can be one of the most powerful and non-intimidating ways of opening people to faith, and why art can help us rediscover something of God even when an artwork is not explicitly Christian.
Together, they discuss the loss of Christian literacy — why so many people can stand before masterpieces in museums without recognising the biblical stories they depict — and how we can learn once again to 'read' sacred art.
But Fr Patrick goes further. Does Christian art have to be explicitly Christian? He shares how he uses everything from beautiful landscapes and Yves Klein's abstract blue paintings to Tracey Emin's My Bed to encourage people to look for deeper spiritual meaning in unexpected places.
The conversation also explores the relationship between beauty, truth and goodness, why beautiful churches and works of art alone cannot guarantee faith, and why the Church needs to rediscover its relationship with contemporary artists.
Fr Patrick also shares the story behind Christian Art, his daily reflections connecting the Gospel with works of art, and how he has used the internet and video to bring this mission of evangelisation to a wider audience.
From Gregorian chant and the beauty of Vespers to the masterpieces of the National Gallery and contemporary art, this is a conversation about learning to see the world — and God — differently through beauty.
