On this 13th Sunday after Pentecost, we reflect deeply on the spiritual reality of merit—what it is, how it works, and why it is essential for our eternal salvation.

This sermon explores:

The definition of supernatural merit as a right to a supernatural reward.

The two kinds of merits: de condigno (owed in justice) and de congruo (rewarded out of God’s generosity).

The four conditions necessary for our works to be meritorious.

Why even the smallest, ordinary acts—done in a state of grace for the love of God—can outweigh the greatest natural works done without grace.

The role of God’s grace and our free will in meriting eternal life.

The teaching of the Council of Trent on the necessity of good works, grace, and God’s promises.

Through this teaching, we are reminded that our daily acts of humility, obedience, and charity—though hidden and small—carry eternal weight. Each action, united to Christ, becomes a step toward everlasting glory.

"The just shall receive the crown of life which God hath promised to them that love Him." (James 1:12)
