Matthew Chapter 8 reveals the divine authority of Jesus Christ through miraculous healings, deliverance from devils, the calming of the storm, and the extraordinary faith of the Roman centurion. In this powerful Gospel passage from the Douay-Rheims Bible, Our Lord cleanses the leper, heals Peter’s mother-in-law, casts out demons, and demonstrates His authority over nature itself.
One of the most profound moments in all of Sacred Scripture occurs here when the centurion says:
“Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof: but only say the word, and my servant shall be healed.”
These words remain forever preserved in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass before Holy Communion.
This reading from Saint Matthew also reminds us of the cost of discipleship:
“The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air nests: but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.”
Matthew 8 is a chapter of faith, obedience, humility, and the overwhelming power of Christ over sickness, demons, fear, and creation itself.
