In this final episode, we move from the affirmation of God to the problem that defines human history: evil. Not evil as an abstract concept, and not merely as a philosophical puzzle, but evil as a lived fact—personal, social, structural, and cumulative.
For Lonergan, that changes everything.
If God exists, then evil is not just something that happens. It becomes a problem within a universe governed by intelligence, power, and goodness. And if it is a problem, then a solution must exist.
This episode is about that solution.
But not as a closed system or a neat theory. Rather, as a new kind of knowing: what Lonergan calls special transcendent knowledge. We begin with the problem of the social surd—the way bias, drift, and bad practice become normalized in history. From there, we ask what any true solution to evil would have to be like if it were to respect human freedom while actually transforming human life.
Lonergan’s answer is exacting. The solution must be one, universal, permanent, historically operative, and compatible with freedom. It cannot simply override human nature from the outside. It must transform it from within.
That is why the solution works through habits:
charity, hope, and faith.
Charity transforms the will through love of the good.
Hope stabilizes inquiry against both despair and presumption.
Faith is not irrational or blind, but a rational assent grounded in divine truthfulness and mediated through a historical collaboration between God and humanity.
This is the culmination of the whole series.
From insight to judgment, from objectivity to metaphysics, from ethics to transcendence, the movement has always been toward one question: what follows if reality is truly intelligible?
Lonergan’s final answer is not closure, but horizon. Not merely theory, but encounter. Not merely “Is this true?” but “What must I do with it?”

This final step in Insight is not about escaping the world. It is about understanding how the human condition can be healed without violating freedom, and how the unrestricted desire to know opens onto a reality that demands not only understanding, but response.
If this series has done its job, the question is no longer only whether it is true.
The question is what you will do with it.
How do we recover meaning in a fragmented world?
Short reflections on consciousness, conversion, and responsibility.
