Byzantine Saints: Aristocles the Presbyter, Demetrian the Deacon, & Athanasius the Reader (20 June)

The Holy Martyrs Aristocles the Presbyter, Demetrian the Deacon, and Athanasius the Reader suffered for Christ during the fierce persecution of Christians under Emperor Maximian Galerius in the early fourth century.
Saint Aristocles, a presbyter from Cyprus, initially fled persecution and hid in a mountain cave. During prayer, a divine light shone upon him, and he received a heavenly command to return and bear witness to Christ through martyrdom. Obeying God's call, he journeyed toward Salamis, stopping at the Church of the Holy Apostle Barnabas, where he met Deacon Demetrian and Reader Athanasius.
After hearing of Aristocles' vision, Demetrian and Athanasius willingly joined him in embracing the path of martyrdom. Together they preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ and boldly denounced pagan idolatry. Arrested by the authorities, they remained steadfast in their confession of Christ despite threats and torture.
The governor ordered Saint Aristocles to be beheaded, while Saints Demetrian and Athanasius were condemned to be burned alive. Yet even amid the flames, the two martyrs remained unharmed by the fire. Finally, all three faithful servants of Christ received the crown of martyrdom through beheading in the year 306.
Their witness reminds Christians of every age that faithfulness to Christ is worth every sacrifice and that God's grace strengthens His servants even in the face of death.
Orthodox Christians commemorate the Holy Martyrs Aristocles, Demetrian, and Athanasius on June 20, while in Greek usage they are remembered on June 23.
