On September 18, the Orthodox Church commemorates St. Ariadne the Martyr of Phrygia, a humble slave who showed greater wisdom and courage than the noble elites of her time. Under the reign of Emperor Hadrian (117–161), she refused to participate in pagan sacrifices during a festival hosted by her master Tertullus.

For her steadfast confession of Christ, St. Ariadne was tortured, starved, and imprisoned. Even under the cruelest punishments, she would not renounce her faith. Released to avoid scandal, she fled persecution but was pursued. Praying for God’s deliverance, a miraculous crevice opened in the mountains, hiding her from her persecutors as she gave her soul to the Lord.

St. Ariadne’s life reminds us of the courage to resist worldly vanities, endure trials, and remain faithful to Christ to the end.
