In this episode of The Lives of the Saints by Father Alvin, we reflect on the inspiring story of Saint Fariel, a Roman Tribune (Colonel) of Vienne in Gaul, who courageously professed his faith during the early 4th-century persecutions.

Saint Fariel sheltered Saint Julian of Brioude, a nobleman and Christian who was later martyred for his faith. When persecution intensified, Saint Fariel himself was arrested for refusing to offer sacrifice to pagan gods. Despite torture, imprisonment, and threats, he boldly declared his fidelity to Christ.

Miraculously freed from his chains, Saint Fariel fled but was soon captured again. Filled with steadfast courage, he embraced martyrdom around the year 304 AD, beheaded near the banks of the Rhône. His relics remain venerated in Vienne, while Saint Julian’s relics are preserved in Brioude, Auvergne.

This moving account reminds us of the power of faith, perseverance under persecution, and the eternal victory of the saints.
