Blessed Pope Innocent V was the first pope from the Order of Preachers founded by St. Dominic. A brilliant theologian, devoted Dominican friar, university professor, cardinal, and ultimately Supreme Pontiff, he dedicated his life to the service of Christ and His Church.
Born Peter of Tarentaise, Blessed Innocent V studied under some of the greatest minds of the Middle Ages and worked alongside St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Albert the Great. His intellectual gifts, deep humility, and administrative skill led him from the classrooms of Paris to the highest office in the Church.
As pope, Innocent V sought peace among the divided Italian states and worked tirelessly for unity between the Latin and Byzantine Churches following the Council of Lyons. Though his pontificate lasted only five months, his legacy of scholarship, holiness, and dedication to Christian unity endures.
