Most people who look at the Divine Mercy image see two rays of light coming from the heart of Christ. One red. One white. They know it is significant. They know it is connected to Faustina. But most people have never read what Faustina recorded Christ actually saying about what those rays do to a soul that passes through them. And what He described was not devotional symbolism. It was something considerably more specific and considerably more personal than that.

In diary entry 299, Christ explained to Faustina both the meaning and the power of the two rays with unusual directness. The pale ray stands for the water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the blood which is the life of souls. And then He said something that changes the entire texture of how those rays are understood.
