Cliff Riley argues for a living, which makes it strange that his biggest career move came the moment he stopped trying to control the outcome. Six months ago, he left a litigation partnership at a large national firm for a small boutique called SL Law (strategic litigation, though everyone calls it Salt and Light), taking cases for religious objectors and against abortion providers. Roughly half the work only pays if he wins, with four kids at home and a fifth on the way. His plan was a novena, honest homework, and the hardest thing a high-agency man can do – simply let go.
His college roommate was supposed to be the lawyer. Then he announced he wanted to be a monk. Cliff takes a seat at the Tiny Table with Paul Kolker, Nick Bezner, and Jeff Schiefelbein of The BeatiDudes to talk about that friendship, a federal judge with four Harvard degrees and a Darth Vader voice whose own kids were unimpressed, why dads earn their respect in adolescence, and why discernment is less about white-knuckling the answer than doing your part and trusting God with the rest. The billion-hour jokes start early and never stop.
