Tending the Pope's Gardens: Inside Look at the Vatican Gardens | EWTN Vatican

Half of the entire territory of Vatican City is green.
Dating back to the 13th century, when Pope Nicholas III transferred the papal residence from the Lateran to the Vatican, the Vatican Gardens began as a large walled garden with lawns, wooded areas, vineyards and orchards, providing herbs, fruit and vegetables for the papal household.
Over the centuries, the Gardens continued to grow and evolve, enriched by plants and rare botanical specimens from around the world.
From gardeners and greenhouse staff to warehouse workers and those responsible for floral arrangements at the Apostolic Palace and St. Peter’s Basilica, around 35 people keep the Gardens and their wider operations running.
