“When You Fast” — Christ’s Call to True Asceticism | Preparing for Great Lent

As we enter the Great Fast, Christ gives us a powerful and deeply personal command in the Sermon on the Mount:
“When you fast…”
In this reflection for Forgiveness Sunday (Cheesefare Sunday), we look closely at Matthew chapters 5, 6, and 7 — the masterpiece of Our Lord’s teaching — and focus on the interior, ascetical life that Great Lent calls us to embrace.
Fasting is not merely about food. It is about curbing the passions. It is about disciplining the will. It is about restoring right relationship with God, with others, and with the world.
