Michael Matt's read on the France riots: the Church in France collapsed first, and everything in the streets followed. "You traditionalists are too extreme? Man, your church is burning down. So are your countries."
Five minutes with The Remnant's editor on why no lay effort can fix France until the bishops lead - and why he's not sorry for saying they're useless.
Joe McClane opens with the question Bishop Rob Mutsaerts put to the Catholic Identity Conference: has synodality strengthened the faith, filled the churches, produced vocations, deepened Catholic identity, increased Mass attendance, clarified moral teaching, or increased missionary courage? Michael Matt answers with the Vatican's own statistics on France - vocations, baptisms, marriages and practicing Catholics in free fall - followed by abortion written into the French constitution (2024), same-sex marriage (2013), and the assisted-dying law given final approval by the National Assembly in July 2026. Cause and effect, he argues: the Church was weakened first; the country followed.
Then the harder question from Joe: Christendom's kings and patriarchs once gave life and treasure to defend it - King St. Louis IX went on crusade twice and died on the second. What explains a 180-degree shift in leadership? Matt's answer: a massive crisis of faith at the highest levels of the Church, bishops busy canceling the Latin Mass while the country burns, and a political class he suspects would rather let it burn than see France remember what its religion was.
Recorded Monday, October 19, 2026 on A Catholic Take with Joe McClane, as France counted the cost of its worst unrest in years (about 1,200 arrests and 150 injured police over the weekend of October 17-18, per the Interior Ministry).
