St. John of Avila was one of the greatest Catholic preachers and spiritual directors of the 16th century. A close friend of St. Ignatius of Loyola and spiritual adviser to St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of God, St. Francis Borgia, and many other saints, his life transformed Spain during the Counter-Reformation.
Born into wealth, John of Avila renounced everything to serve Christ. His sermons converted countless sinners, inspired saints, and shook entire cities with calls to repentance and holiness. Despite persecution, imprisonment, and false accusations before the Inquisition, he remained faithful to God and continued preaching with extraordinary zeal.
