The Holy Martyrs Philadelphus, Cyprian, Alphius, Onesimus, Erasmus, and their companions are commemorated by the Church on May 10th. These courageous early Christians suffered during the fierce persecutions of the 3rd century after refusing to deny Jesus Christ.
In this video, we explore the inspiring story of these martyrs from Italy and Sicily — including the holy brothers Alphius, Philadelphus, and Cyprian, sons of the governor Vitalius, who converted to Christianity and were baptized by Saint Onesimus.
During the persecution ordered under the Roman emperors, these faithful Christians were arrested and tortured for their confession of Christ. Saint Onesimus was crushed beneath a heavy stone in Rome, while Erasmus and fourteen other martyrs were beheaded. The brothers Alphius, Philadelphus, and Cyprian were sent to Sicily where they endured horrific sufferings for the Faith.
Saint Philadelphus was burned alive upon an iron lattice in 251 AD, yet the martyrs remained steadfast in their love for Christ unto death. Centuries later, in 1517, their incorrupt relics were discovered in Leontini, Sicily — a powerful testimony to God’s glory revealed through His saints.
Their witness continues to inspire Christians today to remain faithful, courageous, and devoted to Jesus Christ regardless of persecution or suffering.
