On May 1, we honor St. Asaph of Llanelwy, a holy bishop and disciple of St. Kentigern (St. Mungo), whose life radiates discipline, devotion, and profound love for God.

According to The Lives of the Saints by Fr. Alban Butler, St. Asaph lived in a remarkable monastery in North Wales where 965 monks served God in strict order and continual prayer. This holy community was divided into groups—some laboring in the fields, others serving within the monastery, and 365 monks dedicated solely to the Divine Office, ensuring that praise to God never ceased day or night.

This extraordinary model of monastic life reflects the heavenly reality: unceasing worship before the throne of God.

St. Asaph, chosen for his learning, virtue, and holiness, became abbot and later bishop. Known as a powerful preacher, he boldly proclaimed:

“They who withstand the preaching of God’s word envy the salvation of men.”

He authored ecclesiastical works and helped preserve the life of St. Kentigern. He died around the year 590, leaving behind a legacy so profound that the episcopal see itself came to bear his name.
