The holy Martyrs Juventinus and Maximus were Christian soldiers who served as bodyguards to the Roman emperor Julian the Apostate. They are commemorated on September 5.

While staying in Antioch, Julian devised a plan to force Christians into participating unknowingly in pagan sacrifice. He ordered that food sold throughout the marketplaces be sprinkled with blood offered to idols.

Juventinus and Maximus refused to remain silent. They openly condemned the emperor’s actions and boldly denounced his apostasy from the Christian Faith.

Although they were soldiers entrusted with protecting Julian, their highest loyalty belonged not to an earthly ruler but to Jesus Christ. For their courageous confession of faith, the two saints were mercilessly beaten and then executed by order of the emperor.

Their witness reminds us that obedience to civil authority can never require cooperation with idolatry, apostasy, or sin. When earthly rulers oppose the law of God, Christians must remain faithful to Christ—regardless of the consequences.

May Saints Juventinus and Maximus obtain for us the courage to confess the Faith openly and remain loyal to Christ amid persecution.
