On February 15, the Church commemorates Venerable Euphrosynē of Alexandria and her father Paphnutius — a powerful story of radical renunciation, hidden holiness, and total surrender to Christ.

Born in the early fifth century to wealthy and devout Christian parents in Alexandria, Euphrosynē lost her mother at a young age and was raised by her father, Paphnutius, a deeply pious man. When she turned 18, her father arranged a marriage for her — but her heart longed for the monastic life.

In an astonishing act of courage and detachment from the world, she gave away her possessions to the poor, disguised herself as a man, and entered a men’s monastery under the name Smaragdos. For 38 years, she lived in solitude, fasting, and prayer — growing in profound holiness while her own father unknowingly sought spiritual counsel from her.

Before her death, she revealed her identity to him. Struck with grief and repentance, Paphnutius gave away his wealth, entered the monastery himself, and labored in her cell for 10 years until his repose.

Her life fulfills the words of Titus 2:12:

“Renouncing ungodliness and worldly passions, we should live soberly, uprightly, and godly in this present age.”

This is a story of:

Radical sacrifice

Hidden sanctity

Spiritual fatherhood

True detachment from worldly glory

The eternal reward of obedience and prayer

May St. Euphrosynē teach us to renounce the world and seek Christ alone.
