Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever.

Tonight we continue our study of The Evergetinos (Volume 2), Hypothesis 32, focusing on contrition—not as mere sadness over sin, but as the wound of love that refuses to “heal” because it continually draws the heart back to God for mercy, purification, and deeper communion.

Beginning on page 246, we explore how true contrition deepens the soul’s perception of the glory of God, reveals our weakness without despair, and frees us from a judgmental gaze toward others. We also examine the Fathers’ teaching on spiritual warfare, sobriety, and the constriction of the heart for protection—alongside the profound paradox of the spiritual life: sorrow and joy at once.

A major highlight is Abba Isaac the Syrian on two kinds of tears:

tears that burn (born of fear and repentance), and

tears that bless (born of love and divine consolation).

We also reflect on the difference between repentance (turning back toward God) and contrition/compunction (penthos) as sorrow that becomes sorrowful joy—a living movement of the heart toward Christ.
