Antisemitism: not economic — the real cause is religious.
One of the strangest aspects of antisemitism is that it often flourishes in places where there are very few Jews. Fr Lucie-Smith reflects on how prejudice can become inherited culturally, socially & even psychologically across generations without direct experience or rational foundation. He raises difficult historical & religious questions, particularly about the way old suspicions, myths & inherited hostilities can embed themselves within societies over time. It is also an important reminder that hatred is not always driven primarily by economics or politics alone. Sometimes it survives because it becomes part of a culture’s emotional inheritance. For Christians especially, this demands serious self-examination given the tragic history of anti-Jewish prejudice within parts of Christian Europe.
