Both men came from noble families and answered God’s call to the priesthood during a time of intense persecution in England. Blessed Alexander Rawlins faithfully ministered to Catholics in secret, while St. Henry Walpole—once a lawyer—was converted by the witness of martyrdom and became a Jesuit priest.

After years of formation, imprisonment, and missionary work across Europe, Walpole returned to England knowing the risk. Within 24 hours of landing, he was arrested, tortured repeatedly in the Tower of London, and eventually condemned to death.

Despite unimaginable suffering, neither priest betrayed the faith nor revealed fellow Catholics. Together, they were executed at York, united in their final witness to Christ.

Their courage reminds us: fidelity to Christ is worth everything.
