Here are 5 Catholic acronyms you’ve probably seen before, but didn’t understand.
First is INRI, which stands for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum. These are the words Pontius Pilate wrote above Jesus’ crucifix. In English, it means “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.
Next is IHS, which is the first three letters of Jesus’ name in Greek. This inscription is often used in Western Art to signify Christ and sometimes appears on the Eucharistic hosts.
Similarly, IC XC is also a Greek abbreviation, meaning Jesus Christ. It is typically found in Eastern iconography along with a specific hand gesture that actually forms these letters.
If you’re familiar with Venerable Fulton Sheen, you’ve probably seen JMJ, which means Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Writing this at the top of letters, documents, and papers has become a common practice among Catholics.
Lastly is AMDG, short for Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, which means, For the Greater Glory of God. This acronym originated with St. Ignatius of Loyola and became the motto of the Jesuits.
How many of these did you know? Let me know in the comments!
