Hieromartyr St. Cyril, Bishop of Gortyna in Crete, faithfully served Christ as bishop for fifty years before sealing his witness with martyrdom. Refusing repeated demands to sacrifice to pagan idols, the aged bishop boldly confessed Jesus Christ before the Roman governor.

When St. Cyril was condemned to be burned alive, the flames miraculously refused to harm him. Witnessing this extraordinary miracle, many pagans embraced the Christian faith. Although temporarily released, St. Cyril continued preaching the Gospel throughout Crete, converting many souls and longing only to remain faithful to Christ until the end.

Eventually arrested once again, the eighty-four-year-old bishop joyfully accepted the sentence of death. Placing his head beneath the executioner's sword, St. Cyril entered into eternal glory as one of the great hieromartyrs of the early Church.

His unwavering courage reminds Christians that faithfulness to Christ is worth every earthly sacrifice.
