Why Holy Icons Matter: Truth, Love & the Faith We Hand On

Why do Christians honor holy icons—and what does that teach us about following Jesus Christ? This Byzantine Catholic homily for the Sunday of the Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council connects the defense of sacred images with the Incarnation, faithfulness to the Gospel, and love for every person created in God’s image.

Like a compass that is slightly wrong, small compromises can gradually lead us away from Christ. Neglected prayer, justified sins, and ignored teachings can change our direction before we recognize how far we have wandered.

The Fathers defended holy icons because they defended the truth about Jesus Christ: the Son of God truly became man. Honor given to His image is directed toward Christ Himself. Yet honoring icons also challenges us to respect the people around us, including those with whom we disagree.

This sermon calls us to hold truth and charity together. We can defend Christian teaching without hatred, resist error without pride, and seek unity without sacrificing the faith. Knowing doctrine must bear fruit in forgiveness, humility, prayer, and mercy.

Finally, what will we hand on to the next generation? Our children and those around us need to see the faith lived. May our lives become living icons of Jesus Christ—reflecting His truth, mercy, and love.
