Apostle Nathanael, whose name means “Gift of God,” is commemorated on April 22. Known as a true Israelite in whom there is no deceit, Nathanael was called by Christ after being brought to Him by Philip (John 1:45–51). When Jesus revealed that He had seen Nathanael under the fig tree, Nathanael believed and proclaimed Him as the Son of God.

Many Church Fathers—including St. John Chrysostom, St. Cyril of Alexandria, and St. Epiphanius—identify Nathanael with the Apostle Bartholomew. While the Synoptic Gospels list Bartholomew among the Twelve, they do not mention Nathanael. Conversely, the Gospel of John mentions Nathanael but not Bartholomew, leading many scholars to conclude they are the same person.
