How do I know what God wants me to do with my life? How can I discern my vocation and discover what God is calling me to?
In this video, Fr Stephen Wang explores the Catholic understanding of vocation and discernment and offers practical advice for anyone trying to discover God’s will for their life.
Our vocation is not simply about finding the right career or deciding what will make us happy. God calls each of us to a particular way of living, loving and serving Him and others. For some, this may mean the vocation to marriage and family life, for others, priesthood, religious or consecrated life, the permanent diaconate, or a dedicated single life.
So how can we begin to discern our vocation?
Fr Stephen encourages us to pay attention to the deepest desires of our hearts, the things we love and care about, the people and saints who inspire us, and the ways in which we feel called to serve others. Above all, vocation discernment requires prayer and an openness to God’s will: “Thy will be done.”
God’s call may sometimes be clear and natural, while at other times it may surprise us or lead us in a direction we did not expect. Discernment is therefore a process of prayer, reflection, exploration and conversation with people we trust.
