On September 19, the Church honors St. Sequanus, also known as St. Seine or Sigo, a sixth-century priest, monastic founder, abbot, and miracle worker from Burgundy.

Born in the small town of Mesmont, Sequanus received an excellent education and displayed an inclination toward the ecclesiastical life from childhood. The holiness of his conduct brought him to the attention of the Bishop of Langres, who ordained him to the priesthood.

When envious men began persecuting him, Sequanus used the trial as an opportunity to fulfill a desire he had long carried: to withdraw from worldly affairs and devote himself completely to God. He entered the monastery governed by Abbot John, where he deepened his knowledge of Sacred Scripture and advanced in the religious virtues.

Sequanus eventually established a monastery in a forest near the source of the River Seine. The disciplined religious life he instituted there made the monastery renowned and attracted numerous disciples seeking holiness under his direction.

God further honored His servant with the gift of miracles. St. Sequanus died around the year 580, traditionally on September 19, and his relics were preserved at the monastery he founded.

His life teaches us that persecution and rejection, when surrendered to Providence, can become the means by which God guides a soul toward its true vocation.

St. Sequanus, pray for priests, monks, religious communities, and all who suffer because of envy or persecution!
