What Does St. Paul Say About Submission in Marriage? (Aquinas 101)

"Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.” - Ephesians 5:22-23 (RSV-CE)
This idea of subjection or submission seems out-of-step with modern sensibilities, yet this teaching is part of Scripture, so how should we understand it?
Though this letter was originally addressed to the Ephesians, it invites modern readers to more deeply contemplate Christ's love for the Church, and in return, to bring the fruits of that contemplation into the married life.
