On March 26, the Church commemorates the heroic Hieromartyr St. Irenaeus, Bishop of Sirmium, who gave his life for Christ during the brutal persecutions of the Roman Empire.

A devoted husband and father, St. Irenaeus raised his children in Christian piety and became widely respected for his education and holy life. Appointed Bishop of Sirmium, he boldly preached the Gospel in a time of danger.

Arrested under Emperor Diocletian’s persecution, he was brought before the governor Probus and commanded to deny Christ and sacrifice to pagan gods. Even as his family pleaded with him to save his life, St. Irenaeus remained unshaken in faith.

His powerful words still echo today:

“My sons believe in God, who will care for them… nothing will force me to renounce my Christ.”

After enduring torture and imprisonment, he was led to a bridge over the River Sava, where he prayed for his flock before being beheaded and cast into the river.

🙏 His witness reminds us: true faith does not compromise—even in the face of death.
