Is mercy really God's first word?
Yes... but not in the way many people think.
The first word of both John the Baptist and Jesus is:
"Repent."
Why?
Because repentance is mercy.
If someone is heading towards destruction, the loving thing is not to affirm the direction they're travelling. The loving thing is to help them turn around.
Mercy isn't permission to remain in sin.
Mercy is God's invitation to conversion.
