Sunday is not merely another Saturday. It is the Lord’s Day—a weekly celebration of Christ’s Resurrection and a foretaste of the eternal Sabbath awaiting the faithful in Heaven.
In this sermon for the 16th Sunday after Pentecost, we contemplate Christ healing the man with dropsy on the Sabbath and confronting the Pharisees who watched Him closely, hoping to accuse Him. This Gospel presents two closely connected lessons: the true sanctification of Sunday and the humility with which we must approach God.
St. Justin Martyr explained that Christians assemble on Sunday because it is both the first day of creation and the day upon which Jesus Christ rose from the dead. Catholics therefore keep Sunday holy through worship, rest, family life, prayer, and—above all—the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
We do not attend Mass merely from habit. We come because God has a right to our worship and because everything we possess—our lives, families, talents, possessions, and Catholic Faith—comes from Him.
The Gospel also exposes pride disguised as humility. True humility is not an outward performance or speaking badly about ourselves while secretly seeking praise. As St. Francis de Sales observed, we may call ourselves miserable but become offended when someone agrees with us. Genuine humility rests in truth: every good thing comes from God, and without Christ we can do nothing.
May every Sunday become a joyful anticipation of Heaven, the eternal Sabbath in which, as St. Augustine teaches, we shall rest, see, love, and praise.
