Cracking the Frozen Sea Within: Lent, Temptation & the Threefold Concupiscence ~ Fr. Perricone

In this powerful First Sunday of Lent sermon, we reflect on a striking quote from Franz Kafka:
“The purpose of a novel is to take an axe to the frozen sea inside us.”
What if that “frozen sea” is the accumulated rust of sin, negligence, comfort, and pride in our souls?
Lent is holy because Mother Church pours out extraordinary graces during these 40 days — but those graces only penetrate a heart willing to be broken open through mortification, self-denial, and perseverance.
In this meditation, we explore:
The spiritual meaning of Kafka’s “frozen sea”
St. Leo the Great on the “rust of our earthly nature”
The three temptations of Christ in the desert
Concupiscence of the flesh (comfort & pleasure)
Concupiscence of the eyes (covetousness & possession)

Our Lord entered the desert to show us how to crack the ice within. Lent is not about comfort — it is about conversion.
If we persevere, the angels will come.
