Byzantine Saints: Martyr Cyril the Deacon of Heliopolis, and those with him (29 March)

On March 29, the Church commemorates Martyr St. Cyril, Deacon of Heliopolis, and those who suffered alongside him under Julian the Apostate—one of the most brutal persecutors of Christians after Constantine the Great.
According to the historian Theodoret, during the reign of St. Constantine, St. Cyril courageously destroyed pagan idols and temples in Heliopolis, Phoenicia, boldly proclaiming the truth of Christ. But when Julian the Apostate rose to power and attempted to restore paganism, a violent persecution broke out.
St. Cyril was seized by pagans and subjected to a horrific martyrdom: his body was mutilated, his stomach cut open, and like wild beasts, his persecutors consumed his flesh. Yet divine justice followed—those who committed such atrocities were struck with blindness, boils, and terrible afflictions.
During this same persecution, many Christians in Ascalon and Gaza—including priests, women, and children—were also martyred. Their bodies were desecrated, cut apart, and fed to swine. Yet these holy souls received the crown of victory in Heaven, while their persecutors faced eternal judgment.
