In the 1940s, Oppenheimer signed off on the Plutonium Experiments. Little was yet known about the effects of plutonium on the human body, so doctors agreed to inject patients -- without their knowledge -- with plutonium to observe its effects.

The experiments were exposed decades later, and condemned by the U.S. government.
