During the French Revolution, a group of 16 Carmelite nuns offered their lives to God to end the Reign of Terror.

On July 17, 1794, they went to their deaths singing hymns of praise to God.

God accepted their sacrifice: Ten days later, the architect of the Reign of Terror, Robespierre, met his own death at the guillotine, and the Reign of Terror came to an end.
