In this powerful homily, we reflect on the life and heroic virtue of St. Andrew Avellino, a saint who worked tirelessly for true Catholic reform during one of the most corrupt and turbulent eras in Church history. From battling personal weakness to confronting scandal within the clergy, St. Andrew embodies what it means to keep one’s lamp burning for the Lord, just as the Gospel commands: “Gird your loins and light your lamps.”
Born in 1521 in southern Italy, St. Andrew Avellino lived during the Protestant Reformation yet chose conversion, prayer, and penance over despair. His sincere repentance after telling a single lie in court transformed him into a model of honesty and spiritual discipline. Despite facing violence and suffering while reforming a scandal-ridden convent in Naples, he persevered in humility, fidelity, and devotion to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
This homily beautifully connects the saint’s life with today’s Gospel and the reading from Ecclesiasticus—reminding us that holiness does not mean never falling, but always rising with love and perseverance. Like St. Andrew, we too are called to keep our hearts ready for the Lord’s return, our lamps burning brightly through prayer, sacrifice, and steadfast faith.
May St. Andrew Avellino intercede for us as we strive to stand daily before the altar of God with purified souls, burning lamps, and hearts ready to say: Introibo ad altare Dei — I will go unto the altar of God.
