Born in 1521 in southern Italy, St. Andrew Avellino lived during the Protestant Reformation yet chose conversion, prayer, and penance over despair. His sincere repentance after telling a single lie in court transformed him into a model of honesty and spiritual discipline. Despite facing violence and suffering while reforming a scandal-ridden convent in Naples, he persevered in humility, fidelity, and devotion to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

This homily beautifully connects the saint’s life with today’s Gospel and the reading from Ecclesiasticus—reminding us that holiness does not mean never falling, but always rising with love and perseverance.
