On the Feast of the Guardian Angels, a new report exposes what critics call pagan spirituality being brought into the Catholic Church under the label of inclusion. The lead story: a July smudging ceremony at Holy Cross parish in Durham, North Carolina, attended by Raleigh Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama and held in honor of St. Kateri Tekakwitha. A guest from the Raleigh diocese argues the ceremony went beyond Native ritual into an overtly "Wiccan" four-directions prayer—noting that "the word Jesus is not mentioned once" in the parish's own write-up.
The sharpest point is the irony of the setting. Kateri was a Mohawk convert persecuted for rejecting that religion. Using her feast to bring it back, the guest says, is "supremely satanic and inverted." John-Henry Westen widens this into a broader charge: ecumenism is being "bastardized" into polytheism, with critical theory and leftist ideology entering the Church.
