Byzantine Saints: Saint Agapitos the Confessor & Wonderworker, Bishop of Synnada (18 February)

On February 18, the Church commemorates St. Agapitos the Confessor and Wonderworker, Bishop of Synnada in Phrygia — a holy monk, miracle-worker, dragon-slayer, and faithful shepherd of Christ’s flock.
Born to pious parents during the reign of Emperors Diocletian and Maximian, St. Agapitos left the world at a young age to enter a monastery near Synnada. Because of his holiness and virtue, he was beloved by his abbot and received the gift of reading, writing, and deep knowledge of the Holy Gospel.
Through prayer, he performed over one hundred miracles. Most famously, he destroyed a great dragon that terrorized the region — carrying off both people and animals. By the power of God, he freed the faithful from fear and devastation.
Later, he was forcibly recruited into the Roman army under Licinius, where he witnessed the martyrdom of Saints Victor, Dorotheos, Theodoulos, Agrippa, and others. Though wounded by a spear, St. Agapitos was preserved by Divine Providence.
When Emperor Constantine the Great learned of his miraculous healings, he sent a sick servant to him — and the servant was cured. Refusing worldly rewards, St. Agapitos asked only to return to his monastery.
Eventually ordained a priest and later chosen as Bishop of Synnada, he guided his flock in Orthodox faith and virtuous living until his peaceful repose.
St. Agapitos reminds us that true strength is found in holiness, prayer, courage, and fidelity to Christ.
