St. Lucillian and those who suffered with him at Byzantium are commemorated by the Church on June 3. Once a pagan priest during the reign of Emperor Aurelian, St. Lucillian came to recognize the emptiness of pagan worship and embraced the true Faith of Jesus Christ through Holy Baptism.

Filled with zeal for the Gospel, he preached Christ boldly and converted many pagans. His witness drew the anger of those opposed to Christianity, and he was denounced to the authorities. Refusing to renounce Christ, the elderly saint endured brutal tortures, imprisonment, and eventually martyrdom.

While imprisoned, St. Lucillian met four young Christian confessors: Claudius, Hypatius, Paul, and Dionysius. Encouraging them to remain steadfast in their faith, he strengthened them for the trials ahead. Though they were cast into a fiery furnace, God miraculously preserved them. Eventually they were taken to Byzantium, where the four youths were beheaded and St. Lucillian was crucified.

Also remembered is the Holy Virgin Paula, who devoted herself to serving imprisoned Christians. She fed them, tended their wounds, and reverently buried the bodies of martyrs. Arrested for her Christian witness, she too survived a fiery furnace through God's power before ultimately receiving the crown of martyrdom through beheading.

Their lives remind us that no earthly suffering can overcome those who place their trust in Christ. May the prayers of St. Lucillian, Claudius, Hypatius, Paul, Dionysius, and the Holy Virgin Paula strengthen us to remain faithful in every trial.
