Exodus 17: 8 - 13
Luke 18: 1 - 13
Today's first reading from the Book of Exodus tells us how Amalek went to war against the Israelites. Moses sent Joshua to fight, while he stood at the top of a mountain with Aaron and Hur. There he began to pray with his hands raised to heaven. Whilst Moses kept his hands raised, the people of Israel were winning the battle. But as soon as Moses grew tired and lowered his arms, Amalek's people started winning. So when Moses grew tired, Aaron and Hur held his arms up for him.
Moses was not able to fight, but he could stand there and pray. And the prayer of Moses seemed more necessary than Joshua’s fighting. The battle did not depend so much on swords and arrows and spears, on Joshua, on his soldiers. Rather, it depended on those two elderly arms of Moses raised in prayer. As long as those arms were raised in prayer, Joshua's swords and arrows and spears and warriors and strategies... worked. But if not, the archers of Israel were less accurate than the Stormtroopers in Star Wars.
St Josemaría: «In this world, few people pray, and those who pray, pray little.»
Let's turn that around. Can we pray more? Event 10 times more? if I can't multiply the quantity of my prayers by 10, I could certainly multiply the quality of my prayer, the attention, devotion, love and faith I pray with.
Food for prayer…
