Following the severe global restrictions placed on the Latin Mass by the 2021 motu proprio Traditionis Custodes, the FSSP met with Pope Francis to clarify their standing. On February 11, 2022, Pope Francis issued an explicit, formal decree, granting all members of the FSSP the full faculty to celebrate the Mass, administer the sacraments, and fulfill the Divine Office according to the 1962 liturgical books. However, this hasn’t been the case. Both the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter and the Institute of Christ the King have faced ongoing suppression and ghettoization. This has served as a catalyst for why the Sspx believes they need their own bishops to survive.
