Stegman had previously rejected assisted dying after her stomach cancer diagnosis. An assessment was later conducted while her granddaughter was away. According to the account, Stegman failed questions intended to determine her mental capacity, became distraught when told she would die, and repeatedly said she had made a mistake. The procedure involved multiple attempts to establish an IV, resulting in significant bleeding. Her granddaughter is now appealing to Ontario authorities, the Patient Ombudsman, and police to determine whether her grandmother's death was lawful.

From assisted suicide to liturgical suppression, the pattern is clear: the culture of death advances while the Church restricts its own tradition. The grandmother said she made a mistake. The Church is making one too. The question is whether anyone will listen before it is too late.
