Saint Asclas of Egypt is commemorated on May 20th as one of the courageous early Christian martyrs who boldly confessed Jesus Christ during the brutal persecutions of Emperor Diocletian. Born in Hermopolis in Middle Egypt, St. Asclas stood fearlessly before the governor Arian and refused to sacrifice to pagan gods.

Despite savage torture, iron instruments tearing his flesh, and repeated attempts to break his spirit, Saint Asclas endured every torment while glorifying Christ. During his suffering, he prophesied that Governor Arian himself would one day confess Jesus Christ as the one true God.

One of the most astonishing moments in the life of St. Asclas occurred on the Nile River, when the governor’s boat miraculously became immovable after the saint prayed to God. Only when Arian unknowingly confessed belief in the one true God did the boat move again.

Eventually sentenced to death by drowning around the year 287 AD, Saint Asclas remained steadfast to the very end. Three days later, Christians recovered his body exactly as he foretold and gave him a proper burial.
