We are still recuperating from the recent feasts of Christmas, with yesterday’s solemnity of Mary the Mother of God. It is such a wonderful solemnity, such a key starting point of our faith in the incarnation of Christ. She was the Mother, virgin, associate, handmaid who made it all happen. What a good way to start the year. Tomorrow will be the memorial of the Holy Name of Jesus. That Jesus had this name, Jeshua, was the result of a task undertaken by Saint Joseph, who was given this explicit responsibility by an angel.

In a few days, we will celebrate the feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, where the newly-named child will be placed on Mary’s lap and be presented, or made known publicly, for the world to worship.

Today, Saint Gregory of Nazianzen (c. 330–389) and Saint Basil the Great (c. 329–379), both among the Cappadocian Fathers who were famous in the church for defending the true doctrine of the faith against the toxic heresy of Arianism.
