Saints Bertha and Rupert of Bingen are among the lesser-known but deeply inspiring saints of the Catholic Church. Their story, preserved and promoted by the great mystic St. Hildegard of Bingen, reveals a holy mother and son whose lives were marked by charity, detachment from worldly riches, and profound devotion to God.

Born into nobility along the Rhine, young St. Rupert possessed extraordinary wisdom and holiness even as a child. After the death of his pagan father, his Christian mother Bertha devoted herself entirely to raising him in the faith. Rupert’s love for the poor and his zeal for God transformed Bertha’s heart and inspired her to establish hospitals and charitable works for the needy.

Together they journeyed to Rome, gave away their wealth, and withdrew into a life of prayer near Bingen, where Rupert died at only twenty years old. St. Bertha continued serving God for twenty-five more years before being buried beside her son.

Their lives remind us that sanctity is found through humility, charity, obedience to God, and love for the poor.
