Sometimes knowing what beauty isn’t helps define what beauty really is. The rise of “looksmaxxing” and other drastic measures to increase physical and social capital is the flip side of the same overt ugliness coin. The novel Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde (as well as À Rebours by Joris Karl Huysmans) is a perfect cautionary tale for our time, revealing the horrors of descending into pure aestheticism, the pursuit of beauty divorced from truth.
