Pope Leo XIV has appointed Professor Umberto Longo to the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences. The speaker argues that Longo has an extensive public connection to Freemasonry, including a 2014 Scottish Rite publication identifying him as "Fratello" (brother), a 2019 appearance at a Grand Oriente d'Italia conference, and a 2022 event where the Sovereign Grand Commander of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite addressed him on camera as "Brother Professor Longo."
The appointment raises a fundamental question: how does this square with the Catholic Church's longstanding condemnation of Freemasonry? Church teaching, from Pope Clement XII through Leo XIII to Cardinal Ratzinger, has consistently held that Masonic membership is incompatible with Catholic faith. Longo's public association with Masonic organizations appears to contradict that teaching.
John-Henry argues the appointment is not an isolated incident but a signal of the Vatican's direction under Pope Leo XIV. The evidence is public. The Church's teaching is clear. The question is not whether Longo is a Freemason, it is why the appointment was made and what it means for the Church's future. The faithful are left to wonder whether the Vatican has abandoned its own principles.
