He was one of King Henry VIII's closest friends. Then the King demanded that he choose between loyalty to the crown and loyalty to God.
St. Thomas More refused.
Thomas More was one of the greatest lawyers and statesmen of Tudor England. He served as Lord Chancellor, advised Henry VIII, raised a family, and became one of the most respected men in the kingdom.
But when Henry VIII demanded that More recognize him as the supreme head of the Church in England, More could not agree.
He chose silence rather than speak what he believed was false.
For fourteen months, More was imprisoned in the Tower of London. His family pleaded with him to take the oath. The King repeatedly offered him a way home.
All he had to do was sign.
He refused.
On July 6, 1535, Thomas More was executed.
His final testimony has echoed through the centuries:
“I am the King's good servant — but God's first.”
In this episode of Stories of the Saints, discover the remarkable life, faith, family, courage, and martyrdom of St. Thomas More — patron saint of statesmen and politicians.
His story asks a question that remains just as relevant today:
What do you do when the world asks you to compromise your conscience?
