Blessed Thomas of Costacciaro (March 25), as recorded in The Lives of the Saints by Father Alban Butler, is a powerful example of radical holiness, penance, and solitude.

Born near Gubbio in Umbria, Blessed Thomas showed a deep love for God even as a child. Inspired by pilgrimage and sacred places, he eventually joined the Camaldolese hermits of St. Romuald. Yet his desire for deeper union with God led him into total solitude—living in a remote cave believed to have once sheltered St. Jerome.

For four years, his life remained hidden from the world. Sustained only by roots and wild fruits, he embraced extreme fasting and penance. When he was finally discovered, his body was worn to skin and bones—but his soul burned with holiness.

Despite people bringing him food, Blessed Thomas gave everything away to the poor and continued his austere life. Many were drawn to his sanctity, yet he imposed no strict rule—only inspiring others through his example, wisdom, and miracles.

He died in 1337, consumed by a life of sacrifice and love for God. His story reminds us of the power of detachment, humility, and total surrender to divine will.
