St James of Nisibis, commemorated on January 13, was one of the great ascetics, miracle workers, and defenders of the Orthodox Christian faith in the early Church.

Born the son of Prince Geil of Armenia, St James received a noble upbringing but from his youth chose a life of solitude, prayer, and extreme asceticism. For many years he lived in the mountains near Nisibis, on the border of the Roman and Persian Empires, dwelling under the open sky, clothed in goat skins, and sustaining himself on fruits and greens.

During the persecution under Emperor Maximian (284–305), St James courageously confessed Christ. Because of his holy and strict life, the faithful of Nisibis elected him bishop no later than 314 AD.

As bishop, St James became renowned for:

Miracles and clairvoyance

Saving Nisibis through prayer from invasion by Shapur II of Persia

Being a prominent father of the First Ecumenical Council (Nicaea, 325)

Founding a public school in Nisibis and teaching personally

At the request of St Gregory the Illuminator of Armenia, St James wrote an important theological work in 18 chapters, addressing:

Faith, love, fasting, and prayer

Spiritual warfare

The resurrection of the dead

Duties of pastors

Circumcision and responses to Judaism

Christian discipline and food

Christ as the Son of God

St James of Nisibis reposed peacefully around the year 350 AD, leaving behind a legacy of holiness, wisdom, and unwavering Orthodoxy.
